In 1915 Emerson McWhorter established the water works system that supplied the Brentwood Golf and Country Club and twenty homes. This system was the forerunner of the Brentwood Water Works. The Brentwood Water Works was founded in 1935 and had the distinction of being the first publicly owned water facility in the town of Islip. In 1955, a centrally located facility was built on Carroll Street with a pumping station that delivers 1000 gallons of water a minute. In 1962 the demand for water necessitated a second pumping station. The new station was built with an elevated water tank that has a capacity of 1 million gallons. The green elevated tank on Third Avenue has become a Brentwood landmark.
