Brentwood Presbyterian Church

The Brentwood Presbyterian Church was the second house of worship built in Brentwood. The early history of this church began in 1891 with seventeen residents of the community having informal prayer meetings in the Quanahasset Hotel. The majority of these people were Presbyterian from previous church affiliations. After several months of prayer meetings, it became the desire of this congregation to have a Presbyterian Church in Brentwood. They decided to pray for and work for a Presbyterian Church. In October of 1891 they sought approval from the Nassau Presbytery to form the Brentwood Presbyterian Church. A committee was appointed by the Presbytery that included the Rev. Henry A. Lewis of the Smithtown Presbyterian Church, Rev. William S.C. Webster and Elder Charles G. Sands of the Islip Presbyterian Church. These men were given the authority to recommend that a Presbyterian Church be established in Brentwood. The first formal worship services and Sunday School meetings were held on November 8, in the Quanahasset Hotel with the Reverend Webster presiding. On December 13, the committee appointed by the Nassau Presbytery gave official sanction for the establishment of the Brentwood Presbyterian Church, and received seventeen people as members.  The cornerstone of the church building on Brentwood Road was laid on December 22, 1891. Early members of the church included the George Studley family, the McCulloch family and the Dr. William H. Ross family. Dr. Ross served as elder in the church for fifty years. Two stained glass windows were placed in the church building in memory of Elvira Stanley Studley and one in memory of her daughter Ella Studley. Rev. Joseph Speers was installed as the first pastor of the church on December 22, 1891. The people and the completed building were dedicated to the service of God on April 11, 1893. The little white church building on Brentwood Road was the home of the Brentwood Presbyterian Church for eighty three years.

In 1967 an education building was built at 125 Second Street and sadly in 1972 this building was destroyed by fire. The building had been used for Sunday school classes, and other local organizations including Head Start, Alcoholics Anonymous and Boy Scouts. In order to start again the congregation decided to build a new church and educational building as one structure on the Second Street property. The church building on Brentwood Road was sold to a Masonic lodge for $40,000. That money plus the $40,000 received from fire insurance and $20,000 from the congregation was enough to build a new sanctuary with an educational wing. On Sunday, March 3, 1974, which was Reformation Sunday, the congregation marched from the old church on Brentwood Road to their new church at 125 Second Street. Although the original church building is not an official landmark, this first church building is still standing on Brentwood Road where it was begun in 1891. There is a sign outside the Masonic lodge that states that the building was originally the Brentwood Presbyterian Church.
