George Walter was born in Bavaria, Germany in October 1861. He married his wife Bertha in 1882 who was also from Germany and both of them traveled to the United States in 1883. Bertha was born in March 1864. According to census records they lived in Southold for a short period of time around the 1900’s and moved to Brentwood by 1910. They had five children, Joseph who was born in August 1882, Mary E. born in May 1885, Louis born in April 1886, Stephen H born in January 1888 and Annie B born in August 1893.

George Walter managed the Peck Farm Estate for fifty-seven years according to Dyson’s book, “A Century of Brentwood.” His sons joined him on the farm and are listed as farmers on some of the census records. By 1920 Mary had married Mr. Schimke and returned to Peck farm with her three children, Bertha Schimke who was born in 1906, Margurite born in 1907 and Walter H. born 1918.

George was actively involved with his community. He helped organize the Brentwood Fire Company in 1926 and was an active member of the Democratic Party. He was elected for sixteen two-year terms as Democratic county committeeman. George also was involved with the Suffolk County Farm Bureau. He died in 1937 at the age of 76.
