Arborlea Inn

Page history last edited by Mary Ann Koferl 13 years, 1 month ago

In 1898 Dr William H. Ross founded the Ross Health Sanitarium in his home on Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood, NY. A sanitarium is a health resort. The Ross Health Sanitarium grew in size over the next decade. Dr Ross added rooms to his home and added other buildings to enlarge the facility. The health resort was fully staffed by physicians and nurses. Patients came to be treated medically and stayed to recuperate in the environment of the therapeutic pines and good climate.

Three years after the Ross Sanitarium was established the Arborlea Inn was added as another department of the Ross health facility. The Arborlea was a comfortable attractive forty- room inn with a large amount of piazza and balcony space. A brochure described it as a charming place for those desiring quiet and comfort. It had all the modern improvements, including electric lights. The grounds consisted of twenty-five acres with beautiful lawns, extensive gardens, orchards and evergreens. There was an amusement room with a pool table and other indoor games. Outdoors there was a tennis court, croquet and other games. This was a place where people came for relaxation and rest.  At the Arborlea inn, there were no nurses in attendance. The rates ranged from $12.50 to $24.00 per week.
