The Quanahassett Hotel, later called the Quanahassett Building, was established in Brentwood in 1890 on First Avenue. It was owned by the Koehler family. When the post office was closed at Thompson Station, it relocated to the ground floor of the Quanahassett Building. The Koehler family opened a general store on the ground floor of the building. The hotel entrance was in the center of the building and the hotel rooms were on the upper floors.
The Brentwood United Presbyterian Church was founded in 1891. Their first church service was held on November 8, 1891 in the Quanahassett Hotel. Until the congregation could build their own church building, they continued to meet at the Quanahassett Hotel.
St Anne’s Church was the first Roman Catholic Church in Brentwood. Father Flannigan said the first Mass in the village on July 3, 1895 in a room in the Quanahassett Hotel. Mass continued to be said there until a church building was built in Brentwood.
It is 2007 and the Quanahassett Building is still in its original location on First Avenue. The appearance of the façade is the same. Today the former hotel portion of the building is used for apartments and the ground floor has two business establishments. This landmark building serves as an important visual reference of Brentwood history.
